Why We Wrote This
AI-generated content is everywhere — and most of it is undisclosed, unchecked, and optimized for volume over quality. As a company that builds AI writing tools, we have a responsibility to set standards, not just ship features.
This is our framework for ethical AI content. It governs how we build Aria, what we encourage our users to do, and where we draw hard lines.
Principle 1: Transparency Over Deception
AI-generated content should be identifiable. We don't believe every AI-written email needs a disclaimer, but we do believe that published content — blog posts, marketing copy, documentation — should be honest about its origins.
Aria includes optional metadata tagging that marks content as "AI-assisted" or "AI-generated". For enterprise customers, we offer organization-wide policies that enforce disclosure for specific content types.
Where We Draw the Line
We prohibit using Aria to generate content that impersonates real people, create fake reviews or testimonials, produce misleading news or journalism, or generate content designed to manipulate public opinion. Our terms of service are explicit, and we enforce them.
Principle 2: Augmentation, Not Replacement
The best AI-generated content has a human in the loop. Our product is designed around collaboration: AI drafts, humans refine. AI suggests, humans decide. This isn't just an ethical position — it produces better content.
We've measured this: content that goes through a human review step after AI generation scores 34% higher on our quality benchmarks than content published without review. The human touch — adding nuance, correcting subtle errors, injecting personal experience — is irreplaceable.
Our Commitment to Content Workers
We build tools that make writers more productive, not tools that make writers unnecessary. Our roadmap prioritizes features that empower human creativity: better collaboration tools, smarter suggestions, faster research — not one-click content factories.
Principle 3: Data Stewardship
Your content is yours. We don't train our models on customer data. We don't sell usage data to third parties. We don't use your brand voice to improve our product for your competitors.
When you use Aria, your prompts and outputs are processed in real-time and retained only as long as needed to deliver the service. Enterprise customers can opt into zero-retention mode where nothing is stored beyond the active session.
Third-Party Model Providers
When Aria routes your requests to OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, those providers have their own data policies. We've negotiated data processing agreements with all providers that prohibit training on customer data. But we believe in transparency: our documentation clearly explains which data goes where.
Principle 4: Quality Over Volume
The world doesn't need more AI-generated content. It needs better content, produced more efficiently. Our product decisions reflect this: we don't optimize for tokens generated per minute. We optimize for time saved per high-quality piece of content.
Features that encourage content spam — bulk article generators, automatic scheduling without review, SEO-only content mills — are deliberately absent from our roadmap. If a feature incentivizes volume at the expense of quality, we won't build it.
Principle 5: Continuous Accountability
Ethical frameworks aren't static. As AI capabilities evolve, so do the ethical questions. We commit to reviewing this framework quarterly, publishing updates publicly, and engaging with critics and researchers who challenge our positions.
We also publish a quarterly transparency report covering: content moderation actions taken, requests refused due to policy violations, data requests from law enforcement, and model accuracy metrics across different demographics.
